Get cited in AI answers
Your brand, your services and your pages appear as sources in AI assistants’ answers, right when your customers are doing their research.
Your customers no longer search only on Google: they ask ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude or Perplexity, and read the AI-generated answer before the classic results. These answer engines cite a handful of trusted sources, and the brands they mention capture the visibility and the traffic. Generative engine optimization (GEO), or AI search optimisation, makes your website, your pages and your content visible to, and cited by, LLMs, the generative models that synthesise information.
As a GEO and SEO agency based in Paris, Web Opteam works with SMEs and companies all over France, and remotely, in English, with clients worldwide. Our GEO strategy combines a technical audit, structured data, expert content, brand authority and query tracking: every optimisation for Google also strengthens your presence in AI answers. A clear framework, a service built into your SEO consulting, and a business goal: generating qualified leads.
Your brand, your services and your pages appear as sources in AI assistants’ answers, right when your customers are doing their research.
Readable, structured, factual pages that large language models (LLMs) understand and can cite without distorting the information.
We track the queries where AI cites you, your citations and mentions against your main competitors, and the traffic those citations bring you.
Generative Engine Optimization covers everything that increases the chances of an AI engine citing your brand in its answer. The principle: an LLM doesn’t return a list of links, it writes a conversational answer, close to a dialogue, from the sources it considers most reliable, then mentions a few of them. Where Google’s algorithm ranks pages, a generative model synthesises information. GEO therefore works on three signals: how clear your content is, how consistent the information about your brand is, and your authority on your topic.
How it works varies from one conversational engine to another. ChatGPT with search, Perplexity and Google’s AI Overviews browse the web in real time: well-ranked content can be picked up quickly. Other answers rely on the model’s training data, where your brand’s presence on recognised websites carries more weight. In both cases, the AI tries to understand the user’s intent and the context of the question, then generate the most useful answer. AI can generate a different answer depending on how a question is phrased, so a topic needs to be covered from several angles. A good GEO strategy works on both levers.
Several acronyms are doing the rounds to describe optimising your visibility in AI-powered engines. They largely overlap, but each puts the emphasis on something slightly different.
Getting cited in answers produced by generative AI and large language models: ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Copilot or Perplexity. The aim of GEO: making your site one of the sources the model consults, reuses and mentions. You will also hear GSO (Generative Search Optimization) or LLM SEO.
Being the direct answer to a question: Google featured snippets, voice assistants, AI answer engines. The work focuses on content that answers your customers’ questions clearly, in a few lines, with information that can be used as it stands.
The term has two meanings: SEO for AI in the broad sense, or optimisation for AI Overviews, the AI summaries Google generates at the top of its results, and for Google’s AI Mode. To build these answers, Google runs several searches from a single question (the query fan-out): a site that is well structured across its whole topic has a better chance of being featured in the overview.
Several names, one strategy, built into our SEO consulting: you don’t have to choose between GEO, AEO and AIO.
When people get their answer straight from ChatGPT or a Google AI Overview, they click less on the classic search results. Organic traffic then concentrates on the sources that get cited. Brands mentioned in the answer gain trust and credibility, capture attention and attract qualified visits, with a better conversion rate. The others drop out of the user’s journey, even if they rank well in classic SEO.
AI is changing search, and GEO is now an acquisition and digital marketing channel in its own right. Its impact shows in brand awareness, but also in leads: a prospect who has just discovered your company in an AI answer often arrives with a precise request. It is also a strategic issue, and an advantage for companies that plan ahead: AI relies on sources it considers reliable, legitimate and consistent. The sooner your site sends the right signals, the better its chances of becoming a reference in your market, and of riding the evolution of AI engines rather than suffering it.
GEO is not just for big brands or digital newcomers. For an SME, it is actually an opportunity: AI doesn’t necessarily cite the biggest player, but the clearest and most legitimate source on a specific question. A specialist company with well-structured expert content can appear alongside far better-known competitors.
For shops and local services, AI assistants draw on your Business Profile, Google reviews, local directories, local media, product pages and the consistency of your information: name, address, opening hours, services offered. A small business that takes care of these details stands every chance of being recommended when someone asks “which provider should I choose near me?”. We help SMEs and local businesses structure this information, check it is consistent from one site to another and strengthen their local credibility.
Finally, for an SME, GEO has the advantage of combining several actions that already help SEO: you don’t need a big-company marketing budget to become visible in AI answers. Every SME moves at its own pace, with a plan designed for its size, audience and resources.
Our GEO service covers the whole chain, from the GEO audit to ongoing tracking. Each service is tailored to your website, your sector, your communication and your sales strategy.
We query ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude, as well as Google’s AI Overviews, with the prompts your customers actually use, and we note who gets cited: you, your main competitors, or nobody. Our analysis also covers your website (technical audit, content, structured data) and your brand’s presence across the web. GEO audit deliverables: a snapshot of your AI visibility, the list of queries where you are missing, a comparison with your competitors and a prioritised action plan to improve your citations. Every deliverable is walked through in a meeting, with concrete recommendations.
AI engines readily pick up content that gets to the point: a clear answer at the start of each section, explicit subheadings, lists, figures with sources, useful FAQs, expert pages signed by a real expert. We adapt your existing pages, blog posts and editorial strategy accordingly. This content production (content marketing) is still designed for people: content that is readable for an LLM is readable for your visitors too. Improving a page’s citability also improves the user experience and how well your prospects understand you: citability becomes a writing criterion in its own right.
Schema.org markup (organisation, services, FAQ, articles, reviews), an llms.txt file, AI crawler access in your robots.txt, loading speed, internal linking: this technical foundation lets AI understand exactly who you are and what you offer. It also helps search engines connect your brand to a clear entity, as in Google’s Knowledge Graph, and associate it with your area of expertise. It is a technical pillar of GEO that is often overlooked.
AI cross-checks its sources before citing a brand. Mentions in the media, online press and specialist sites, customer reviews, your Business Profile, consistent information from one site to another: your online reputation counts as much as your pages. We strengthen these signals through link building, appearances in specialist media, quality content and consistent communication across all your channels: scattered messaging blurs the signals AI analyses. This influence is built over time: a brand cited by recognised sources gains legitimacy and becomes a trusted source in the eyes of AI and of your customers alike.
LLM answers change fast: the models evolve, and so do the ways people use them. We track your citations and mentions, and your competitors’, month after month with our GEO tool, built into the Lab Opteam dashboard. To check the effect of each optimisation, we isolate traffic from AI assistants in Google Analytics, alongside Search Console. This data supports decisions and produces clear reports for your sales team: we adjust the GEO strategy continuously, and it is this steering that makes the results last.
Every GEO project follows the same logic, so you always know where things stand.
Your business, your customers, the questions they ask AI, your competitors. This frames the whole strategy.
The GEO audit establishes where you currently stand in AI answers and identifies the opportunities.
Content, technical work, structured data, authority: our team puts the actions in place on your site.
Citation monitoring, regular reporting, adjustments. GEO is an ongoing effort, not a one-off operation.
GEO is a young discipline, and plenty of players are jumping on it. “Best GEO agency” rankings are multiplying, but a comparison table tells you nothing about the method. Here are the criteria to check before choosing your GEO agency:
The cost of a GEO strategy depends on the size of your site, the number of pages to rework, the competition on your topic and the level of tracking you want. At Web Opteam, GEO is built into our SEO consulting: no need to juggle two providers or two budgets. A one-off GEO audit is also available if you want a clear picture before committing. Every service comes with a detailed quote, free and with no obligation: get in touch with our team to talk it through.
GEO operates within a clear legal framework. Tracking traffic from AI complies with the GDPR (RGPD in France) and your legal notice: consent, purpose of processing, retention period. On the content side, you remain the owner of your texts, and you decide which AI crawlers can access them. We help you make these choices with full knowledge of the facts, respecting everyone’s rights.
Our team works with companies all over France, in person or remotely, and with international clients in English. You work with an SEO and GEO consultant, the key contact for your project, who knows your site, follows your results and explains every recommendation. Our approach stays the same: a long-term partnership that serves your growth and your business, with concrete actions rather than reports gathering dust in a drawer.
GEO rests on solid organic SEO: without well-indexed pages, carefully worked semantics and authority, an AI has no reason to cite you. SEO and GEO move forward together, as part of an overall digital strategy.

SEO aims to rank your pages well in search engine results. GEO aims to get your brand cited in AI-generated answers. GEO doesn’t replace SEO: it complements it, because AI largely draws on pages that already rank well and are considered trustworthy. Same foundations (technical, content, authority), with particular attention to the clarity of your answers and the consistency of your brand across the web.
It measures your brand’s presence in AI answers, identifies the questions where you should be cited, then helps optimise your content, structured data and online reputation to improve your chances of being cited. It then tracks how your GEO visibility evolves over time.
There is no shortcut: ChatGPT cites the sources it considers reliable and relevant. To appear in its answers, you need pages that clearly answer your customers’ questions, a site its crawlers can access, and a brand mentioned on other recognised websites. That is exactly what a GEO strategy works on.
Web-connected AI, such as ChatGPT with search, Claude or Google’s AI Overviews, can pick up content within a few weeks. For answers drawn from the model’s training data, the effect is slower. As with SEO, think in terms of months.
Yes, to an extent. You can track a panel of prompts, check the sources each assistant cites, and spot visits from these tools in your analytics. There is no Search Console equivalent for AI yet: tracking relies on samples of searches, which is enough to see the trends.
If you want to be cited, yes: a crawler blocked in robots.txt can’t read your pages. Some companies choose to block the crawlers that collect data to train LLMs while allowing those that power live answers. We help you make that call.
